Welcome to Because Sound Matters
30.04.07
Because Sound Matters is an on line record store that will sell all kinds of Vinyl and DVD-Audio from the Warner Bros. Records family of artists and labels. As you are probably aware there is an incredible amount of music around here...both old and new. The simple statement is, we are very lucky to be around all this amazing music and want to share.

Is this project still alive?
The title says it all. Some of the info on the opening page of this site has been inaccurate for months now. It almost seems as if Warner is abandoning this project.
When people ask what's up with the project on the Steve Hoffman forum, their messages are promptly deleted as if there's some dirty secret no one wants anyone to know about. Then when one comes here, there are messages that have been deleted.
Based on his comments on his forum, it's clear that Steve Hoffman has done his work on Van Morrison and Fleetwood Mac titles (among others), so what are you waiting for? Get them out there. What about those of us who pre-ordered these titles last year? The secrecy and censorship are undermining whatever credibility ****anyone**** involved with this project had!!
I have no idea about the
I have no idea about the Steve Hoffman site at all but I sent out an e mail on Monday explaining where the site is. If you don't have that please e mail vinylhq@mac.com and I will forward it. Thanks for caring. Many titles coming soon.
Reissues
Will the out of print DVD-Audio discs come out soon and any new releases on the horizon?
SEAL
I'm wondering why this website has no information on SEAL vinyl?
New releases?
I've been wearing out the wonderful sounding Sweet baby James and Tres Hombres LP's. Any schedule date for the others?
Hi, You maybe interested in
Hi, You maybe interested in filling the wait with 2 Speakers Corner re-issues from the Warners catalogue - Little Feat's "Dixie Chicken" and Jomi's "Hissing of the Summer Lawns" - both appear to be cut at Acoustech - like SBJ and TH - only not pressed at RTI.
I must admit to preffering RTI pressings - even better with SVP but..
However BSM please hurry up with more back catalogue.
Why Are The Posts Being Deleted?
Q)Why are the posts that ask where are the vinyl and DVD-A titles that were SO touted as "in the works" when this site went up being deleted? Ans)You pretend to offer up titles that will be available to buy-nothing gets released and Warners stock drops 75%-what a joke!
For WB would a DTS-CD or a DVD with a 1500kbps DTS track be....
.......more viable financially-speaking, to help increase the chances of some new releases or re-releases of older material?
Because while I like hi-res more than lossy formats like DTS ---> I like surround *music* more than I like hi-res (hope that makes sense).
That way there would be no licensing fees for the MLP codec, or Dolby Digital for that matter, just DTS. And if it means anything, from what I understand DTS Inc. is now out of the 5.1 music business.
Anyway:
1) The DTS-CD would be the cheaper of the two formats, since CD blanks are less expensive than a dvd but especially, there would be no need to put together a video portion like there would for a dvd.
but.....
2) A dvd-video disc would be better sonically-speaking because of its higher max data rate of @1500kbps, though DTS-CD's 1200kbps rate is still very good.
Also, dvds play "normally" whereas a DTS-CD can act a bit strange sometimes: for example that initial split second burst of static when the first track begins to play; and when scanning through a track some players un-mute themselves and some rather nasty - and loud - staccato static noise comes through.
3) Dvd would also be nicer since WB could include a PCM stereo track, hopefully one with a 24bit sample word length, with either 48kHz or 96kHz sampling, though 96 with its better digital filtering system is preferred.
I also would not mind seeing more of those 96kHz/24bit stereo-only dvds like the Neil Young titles - they sound verrrrry good. And they play on all my dvd players.
By the way, if WB/Rhino is completely out of the surround music business, it would be nice if a note was posted here saying so. Then I could spend more time writing notes to other labels and pestering *them* for multichannel tunes. :^)
Thanks for your time.
All I Want For Christmas (2008) Is Some DVD-A!
I've got money I'm dying to spend on new DVD-A releases. Does anyone want my money in return for something like Fleetwood Mac's Tusk in DVD-A 5.1?
Crickets chirping. . .
I guess not. My money will be waiting if you change your mind WB!
The Cars
Guys, I would KILL to hear The Cars in DVD-audio!! PLEASE tell me this is actually in the works!!
DVD-A: Doors Box and Keeping the Faith
We're still out here and want new DVD-Audio releases, just letting the vinyl crowd have their turn. We have high hopes for 2008...
I see that some DVD-A titles with broken links have been removed from the site. Just as well if you can't get them fixed.
Since The DOORS - Perception DVD-A/CD Box set link is still listed, ("re-release" on Nov 6th) it would be nice to know if it will be possible to order this title through BSM as has been asked of me. Thanks

Simple Appreciation
I would simply like to say a heart felt "Thank You" for caring enough about the sound to begin Because Sound Matters. I don't have a long list of things I must have released NOW. I just want to encourage you to keep working and releasing and hopefully you will be able to bring in enough revenue to be able to start releasing all of the current vinyl titles of this new series on either CD or DVD-A. I don't have a good enough turntable, but I would go buy a DVD-A player if the material was available.
Thanks again and keep up the good work!
New Releases
How much longer do we have to wait to get some news on new releases a lot of great albums have been mentioned?
DVD-A
Hate to sound like a broken record -- how's that for retro -- but I will stand in line for Tusk or Fleetwood Mac in 5.1, and pay a premium price.
More Flaming Lips!
I'm curious as to why only At War with the Mystics appears here. The surround packages for The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots are execellent and not to be missed. I'd like to see more of their back catalog released, even in hi-res stereo; Transmissions from the Satellite Heart and Clouds Taste Metallic would be a good place to start. Now is the time with "The W.A.N.D." being featured prominently in the new Dell ad!
Tusk
I've been waiting for this since 2003. Tusk in DVD-A is one I will definitely buy. How about Fleetwood Mac, the album? Wasn't that also mixed for surround?
And how about all those Steely Dan titles.....
Unreleased Tusk DVD-A
As the story goes, Fleetwood Mac (1975) was also being prepared for 5.1 DVD-Audio release at the same time.
The earlier Steely Dan surround releases would be under Universal's control. Elliot Scheiner has the masters and recently referred to Pretzel Logic specifically.

Existing 5.1 Mixes: Fleetwood Mac's Unreleased Tusk DVD-A
No list of NEW DVD-Audio titles would be complete without Fleetwood Mac's Tusk. The DVD-A disc is referred to in this 2003 Sound & Vision article:
http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/wildcard/477/mobile-surround-sound-page...
Mettler: "Seeing that I had raved about the DVD-A version of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours in my “Road Gear” column in S&V awhile back after listening to it in a 5.1-equipped SUV, Kellogg put me in touch with Ken Caillat, the 1977 album’s original co-producer, who remixed it for multichannel playback in 2001. (He was in the studio putting the finishing touches on the DVD-A version of the Mac’s 1979 opus, Tusk, for a projected fall release.)"
Please add your voice tho this thread if you're as ready to pre-order this DVD-A title as I am.

Tusk 5.1!
Oooh, I'd buy that!!!
Tusk 5.1!
Count me for a buy, even though I have to go through a European seller
Tusk
Count me in !!
Thanks for the DVD-As...
Looks like there's been some digging to see what's lying around at WBR... thanks guys! Know that some of these titles have become pretty hard to find. I already have all of these that I'm really interested in, but am glad to see the DVD-A titles added to the site.
Looking forward to new DVD-A releases in surround sound!!
What about high resolution digital downloads?
I have a computer based audio system. It provides high quality 5.1 surround sound that rivals almost any audiophile standalone surround system. All of my music is stored on my media server and I have all the original CDs as backups. I have only a few high resolution 5.1 surround recordings because SACD isn't compatible with PCs and DVD-A will only work with a mediocre Creative Labs X-Fi soundcard. The 24/96 2 channel and 5.1 channel recordings I have were purchased from either MusicGiants or Linn Records. In case of hard disc failure, I've backed these recording up to DVD-Rs. The software players let me organize my collection and create custom playlists that make listening to music a lot more fun than scanning a cabinet for the right disc to insert into the slot of a disc player. For example, my current player of choice, J.River Media Center has an auto-playlist feature that automatically generates a playlist based on specific criteria I define. Whenever you rip a CD, it also analyzes the audio data to calculate the beats-per-minute BPM and intensity. So I can define a playlist for mellow jazz that I haven't listened to for a month by setting the genre to Jazz and/or Vocal, the BPM < 80, Intensity < 2, lastplayed < 1 month, sorted randomly. It's impossible to do this sort of thing with a DVD-Audio player and discs.
Please consider offering HD Audio downloads from this website!!!
Thanks,

So Why Can't We Get The Moondance DVD-A?
Would like to know what EXACTLY is holding up release of the Van Morrison-Moondance DVD-A that was prepared back in '01 with the Elliot Scheiner mix? I would think Warners definately want to recoup it's investment on this one.If it's an issue of Van holding up approval cause he doesn't like the surround mix-release it with just the stereo mix
Finally DVD-A!
It is exicting to see your site supporting DVD-A. However, don't be surprised if sales via your site are only mediocre. I own these DVD-A titles already, and I'm sure many other site supporters do as well. If you offer *new* titles, or re-issues available exclusively via your site, you will get a better indication of true demand.
Keep it up, your site is headed in the right direction.
Yeah!
I had just about written you all off, but then I heard that there were DVD-As here now. Excellent news, keep 'em coming!
I Just Bought My First DVD-A on BSM!
I'm getting my wish, which was to purchase a DVD-Audio release at becausesoundmatters.com. And I will buy many more DVD-A titles as they are issued. (I already owned the other initial offerings)
This is a great day for dedicated DVD-A fans, but especially for the vinyl guys who now may want to figure out what all this DVD-A noise is all about!

Foreigner DVD-Audio
Has the first Foreigner album been reissued? I keep checking and it has not popped up on any web sites for sale. I am anxious for new releases as well: Randy Newman-Trouble in Paradise, Van Morrison-Moondance, Led Zeppelin, Frank Zappa's-Hot Rats all on DVD-Audio.
Foreigner DVD-A
This disc may eventually surface as part of a DVD-A re-issue program. I got an email the other day that Stone Temple Pilots DVD-A was back in stock at an on-line retailer, so you never know what might still turn up out there.
DVD-A List - Zappa
Great list, many, many of us want Led Zeppelin on DVD-A.
WEA no longer controls Frank Zappa and/or Mothers catalog titles that originally appeared on Warner.
Now that there have been
Now that there have been vinyl releases announced, when can we expect an announcement about DVD-A titles being released?
It's time for Warner to put
It's time for Warner to put out more DVD-A'S while there's still interest.....how bout a DVD-A of YESSONGS.[even in stereo i'd buy it]
It's time for Warner to put
I wish people would quit saying that they would accept stereo. Better fidelity is always great - I agree with you there. But 5.1 is a new sound. A new way. It's the transition; the evolution of recorded music. I'd give nothing for stereo.
DVD-A Is Coming
The DVD-A conversation has begun
DVD-A is coming?
Hi Tim,
You have posted similar messages here on the various threads on this forum.
Do you know something we don't? ;)
Thoughts On DVD-A Is Coming
Perhaps even the critics will appreciate this better with a brief timeline:
Jan 2007 - Tip that a new WEA site will include DVD-A releases.
Feb-Apr 2007 - Speculation on DVD-A; frustration
May 2007 - Soft launch of site, no DVD-A?
June 2007 - Outpouring of DVD-A support & requests
July 2007 - Hello msg appears with no DVD-A news
July 2007 - Blowback postings (me included)
July 2007 - 1st post by 'grover' assuring us DVD-A was coming in some form
After a round of emails with BSM last weekend, I decided to edit previous posts (couldn't delete) to indicate that I feel we are FINALLY on our way to getting DVD-A releases. Prior to these conversations, I was losing faith in the stated BSM premise of providing DVD-A.
The WEA folks behind the site probably didn't realize: 1) the extent of serious DVD-A interest still out there today, 2) how long or involved it would be to get actual DVD-A releases going, 3) how long a rabid fan base will wait for updates, 4) that the forum requires a lot more time and closer moderation
Having said that, I believe anything new title-wise will be months away. The DVD-A groundwork that I figured was going on between January to now, has only just begun. That's disappointing but having to live in my own world of skidding deadlines, sometimes it takes longer than we all think it should.
In reaction to cost factor for DVD-A, we have supplied lists of legacy quad releases that we would buy, existing 5.1 mixes that exist in lossy formats or were completed but never issued. There is no commitment on any of these as yet.
Many have also said they would accept 2.0 stereo DVD-A releases if the cost of 5.1 was too great a hurdle. No word yet if this is happening.
There is a strong possibility that some DVD-A re-issues will appear soon to get the ball rolling. This is the most likely thing to happen for now. I suggested these titles be put back in print:
Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery / Donald Fagen - The Nightfly / Eagles - Hotel California / Fleetwood Mac - Rumours / Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies / Chicago - Chicago II / Neil Young - Harvest
That is as much as I know right now; the rest is faith that the principle players want to make DVD-A releases available once again.
BSM is WBR
We are Warner Bros. Records... not WEA...
Thoughts On DVD-A Coming
Thanks Tim for the well thought out and articulated post.
I am in agreement that the most obvious "first" releases will be the re-activation of some of the old releases.
I'm OK with this as long as they don't judge the sales potential of truly new releases on their sales of the re-activated ones.
I see the list of vinyl coming and the arrival of any (or all) of them on DVD-A would be beyond fantastic.
DVD A
FYI- with some titles that all of us are hopeful about- it isn't so much an issue of supply and demand... Some of the artists that people are talking about on this site and others are not with Warner Bros. Records anymore... So we may or may not have access to their back catalog and if we do, their original deal might not have been open or multi format... So we may only be able to bring out LP format. There are plenty of awesome titles pending on the DVD A side, hopefully these are titles we will all love...
Awesome Titles Pending on DVD-A
grover,
re DVD-A's
my wallet is ready when you are :)
AN IDEA - include EPs
I think it would be a great idea for certain albums hat are being remastered that you include an EP or two from those sessions. For example - RIDE - NOWHERE on sire records. There were several EPs that were just as good as the album like TODAY FOREVER. Certain albums get reissued on vinyl and the EPs are always forgotten. There are only certain albums that this would be worth it but it but I think it is something to keep in mind. I just got Built to Spill's Perfect from Now On and it was a good idea to include the bonus track on the other side of the 2nd. LP. I don't you know if you guys are planning on releasing anything that warner doesn't have direct rights too but another example of what I am talking about would be My Bloody Valentine's Loveless with the Tremolo, You Made Me Realize, Glider, Feed Me With Your Kiss EPs. I would pay $50 to $60 for that. just an idea.
RIDE
I personally love RIDE and I think this is a great idea... I'd love to hear those crushing drums of Dreams Burn Down, remastered from the original tapes... So great.
Blood Sugar Sex Magik
How bout doing a vinyl of the Red Hot Chili Peppers Blood Sugar Sex Magik? This is a fantastic Double LP that have never had a proper US vinyl release. Mastered from the original analog master tapes by Steve Hoffman & Kevin Gray would be mind blowing. Might as well do Californication while your at it. The CD & LP of this album were ruined in the mastering process. Can you say compressed and unlistenable? I'm sure Steve/Kevin could do a bang up job on this one as well. Probably move 5-10K units of each at $24.98. : )
Nevermind...
I just picked up a German pressing of this wonderful 2LP set. The vinyl is superbly quiet and it sounds wonderful! Those Germans sure know what they're doing...! Only paid $30 for it too...
Any Metal Vinyl in the pipeline?
I would assume that WB knows how well Metal still sells. It would be nice to see all the Black Sabbath (Ozzy years) mastered from the original master tapes by Steve Hoffman/Kevin Gray to 180 gram VINYL. Could do the same with Metallica. The stuff would sell like hot cakes!
Metal...
So you love Metallica? Is that what you are saying?
Metallica DVD-A and audiophile vinyl will sell
Rhino issued a boxed set of vinyl in the past couple years (limited to 5000 copies) and that thing sold like it was nobody's business in their fan club.
I missed out on the black album DVD-A due to confusion with the format war and would love a second stab at it. Key tracks from most of their albums were remixed in 5.1 by Kevin Shirley (I think) for a DVD release. What would it take for him to finish up the job for the albums?
There is a built-in audience for this stuff. I had posted something on their fan club site about BSM issuing high-quality Metallica back when I got the e-mail about catalog releases and the place lit up like Christmas.
update
...and here we are just about into November and BSM has not delivered. Not only are the natives restless, I have been accused of making stuff up just to rile people up. Being called a liar is not fun.
I tried my best to rally the troops for you, to build up the hype, now please live up to it.
Update - Not
I suggest trying to adjust to the non-linear sense of time on this website. I put out notices wherever I could and rallied troops as well, based on the uptick in DVD-A activity here in June and have had to endure some red-faced moments since. So now I just wait for 2008.

Dry Well
The well has gone dry for some of us twice. We were sold quad and then 5.1 with a long drought in between. The bad thing is, after quad there was absolutely nothing for us. We'd see something like "Slim Whitman's greatest Hits" or "Zanfir, Master of the Pan Flute" being advertised on TV and we still see stuff like that. They have time to remaster that stuff, but multichannel or quad? Nooo! In 15 years absolutely nothing until DTS came along and started releasing DTS discs. Then the big record companies saw DTS and decided to do it thremselves and cut DTS out of the deal. Don't get me wrong I'm glad they got in the game, because much material came out that otherwise wouldn't have if they hadn't. But I find it hard to forgive Sony for yet another format war. So if the record companies don't want to do this, they should turn over their master tapes to DTS and let them do it and take a percentage of sales only. If DTS doesn't want to do it, then give it to some other small record company under the understanding that they will make quality multichannel DVD A discs only. But not Silverline. And it should be DVD-A not SACD. Nothing against SACD's, they sound fine, but their existance was entirely unnecessary, and they muddied the waters of multichannel. Also, the words "Surround Sound" should be added to the DVD Audio logo. So let there be at least a trickle in the well. Oh and one more thing. Never ever use Dolby Digital for music.
